Upgrade Computer Video Card

Upgrading your video card in your computer will improve overall graphics, loading speed, and lower the resource load while running applications or playing high end games.

The first thing you want to do is determine the type of video card currently in your computer. You can do this by looking it up in the manual that originally came with the computer, going to your computer manufacturer's website to look up your computer specifics, or physically open your computer and remove the card.

TIP: If you remove the card, do so when the computer is powered down and unplugged from an electrical outlet.

If your computer has onboard/integrated shared video, there will be no card to remove, but it may still be able to be upgraded, I will address that in a later article.

The video card is very easy to locate in your computer, once you open it up, it's the component that your display monitor is hooked up with. Disconnect the monitor cable, sometimes there's a screw to take out or a clip, and simply pull firmly up and the card will pop out of the slot.

On the card there will be a label or two. It will tell you the make, model, and type of card that it is. You want your new card to match the same type. Or in other words, one compatible with that now empty slot in your computer.

Types of video cards:
PCI
PCI Express 8x and 16x
AGP 1x, 2x, 4x, and 8x

The above types of cards are all compatible with a different size slot, you cannot put a PCI card in an AGP slot and vice-versa.

The card, manual, or website will also list it's memory amount on it. 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, and so on. When upgrading, go with a minimum of 256MB for your new card.

For the sake of this article, let's just say you have an AGP 8x, 128MB video card.

Now that you determined the type of video card you have, let's go shopping. The two main manufacturers of video processing chips are ATI and NVidia. I highly recommend buying a card with either one of those manufacturer's chips on the card. Personally, I prefer ATI products, but that's just me.

Now the price, how much should you spend? I know from experience, that buying cheap cards is not worth the trouble. Sometimes they don't install correctly, nor does the software. If money is no object, go high-end for sure. I would say somewhere in the middle is probably a good bet. Gamers and graphics designers go for the high end cards for faster performance and high end graphics.

Ok, so you selected your card and purchased it. Now, let's go home and install. I know, I know, you are very excited.

If you haven't already removed your old video card, do so now following the directions above. I can't possibly explain how to remove a card from every type of computer case, but it's really pretty easy and usually quite obvious. Just handle everything with care. If you happen to drop a screw into the computer case, get it out carefully and NEVER USE A MAGNET, it will damage the computer.

Note: It's not necessary to remove the software for your old video card beforehand, computers running Windows XP or above will know that you installed a new video card and will remove the old cards data automatically when the new card is in and detected. You may have some startup software that can be removed from the add/remove programs section in the control panel.

Now, line the new card up evenly with the appropriate slot, then push down firmly, but carefully until it's fully seated and looks level. There may be a green clip on the computer's main board, slide that towards the card until it clicks. Replace the screw or whatever item holds the card permanently in place, sometimes it's a plastic clip.

Close the computer case, plug in the power cord and turn it on. As the computer comes up, it will detect the new video card and may install some generic software drivers to run the card. If it does, great. If not, insert the CD that came with the card, it will auto run for you and just go through the wizard that installs the software for your card.

Another option is to go to the manufacturer's website, either ATI or Nvidia and download the latest software for the card you purchased. That will guarantee you have the newest software for your video card. Usually by the time the cards are sold, they have newer software out there anyway, it's free, so go get it.

Enjoy your new, crispy, faster graphics.

Cheap Laptop Backpack - A Great Way to Protect Your Computer

Laptop backpacks are casual looking laptop bags. This is an easy way to carry your laptop and your other accessories or portable electronic devices. This kind of bag provides a large space and a bounce free way of carrying your laptop because of its adjustable shoulder straps. Here are some tips that you can use when you are looking for a cheap laptop backpack.

It must be designed to carry a laptop, you might say it is very obvious but there are some laptop backpack that are being marketed without even having any padding. How will it protect your laptop if it is not complete.

Your laptop backpack must have separate spare compartments and pockets to accommodate your extra accessories such as power cords, extra batteries, mouse and other more important things you need.

The straps must be durable enough to handle the weight of your laptop and your extra luggage.

If you decide to buy a laptop backpack bag, make sure you research it first. Read feedback and reviews so that you will know which backpacks are good and which are not.

If you are going to pick your laptop bag's design, choose it according to your taste and personality. For you don't want to go around looking like a fool.

When you buy a laptop backpack you have to make sure that there is a guarantee or warranty. If you want to exchange it because you found a problem, you don't want to have a hard time.

You also need to assess the straps; you have to make sure that your shoulders will be comfortable with the straps, especially when you are carrying the backpack. Find a backpack that has a padded strap it will give comfort to your shoulders. Backpacks that are frequently used on trains and at airports should have quality inline wheels that will allow you to avoid back pain during extended travel time.

Some backpack includes a matching day-pack; this is a smaller bag that is mostly used in day-long trips or picnics. You should ask if this comes with the backpack you like or want.

For campers and hikers you want to consider the backpack's ventilation design so you don't become uncomfortably hot when you are carrying your laptop for a lengthy period of time.

It's easy to find a cheap laptop backpack online or in your offline store. The difficult part is not finding one but choosing the right one that will suit you best. To be on the safe side you should only shop at stores or sites that are reputable to make sure you get the highest quality products.

Five Ways to Buy the Most Comfortable Headphones

Headphones can be a viable tool to cut down the disturbances faced by your family members while you listen to your favorite music or watch your favorite videos.

Of course, it is always embarrassing to see your mother looking at you scornfully, whenever you move towards  your entertainment appliances. Definitely, she has got the right to sleep with no disturbance at all.

It is the best solution for you if you don't want to stay away from music even for a single moment, whether it is jogging or traveling or whatever else. However, many people don't prefer headphones.

Most of the times, they bring discomfort and prove to be a menace to the freedom which you have while listening to the music without the headphones.

You get irritated as they cause a pain on the exteriors of your skull, and restrict your movements. Thus you think it is better to throw away these headphones.

However, it is not the same case with every pair of headphones you buy. Just pay attention to some important features and you will grab the best pick from the shop.

Here we go...

One : Many times, even the hisses and buzzes of your headphones can be distracting to your co-travelers in the trains or at other public places. So you need to look out for a specific feature which stops the music from being overheard.

The feature is nothing but a spongy pad which covers your ears completely and confines the sound to you only. Undoubtedly, comfort of others comes first.

Two : It is not only you who makes unwanted noise all the time. Suppose you are listening to the music and your headphone is unable to stop the unnecessary noise coming from outside. Thus you are not able to enjoy it.

Really, it frustrating to listen to all the honking of the vehicles while you are on the way with your favorite music on. Thus buy a pair of headphones equipped with a noise canceling feature. It stops all the noise, which are not a part of your Mp3, from distracting you

Three : If you are planning to buy headphones with cords then first measure the distance between your audio/video systems and the place where you love to sit at while listening to the music. Thus try to buy cords which cover this distance otherwise you would be forced to leave your favorite place.

Four : While buying wireless headphones, be assured to grab a pair which comes with inbuilt sound controller. Having such a pair of headphones will prevent you from reaching out to your home theater every time you need to control the volume.

Five : The manufacturers of the entertainment appliances make sure that a single pair of headphones must be fit-for-all-heads. Thus, while making headphones, they choose an elastic material which makes the headphones more adjustable. Also they wrap a thick pad of sponge all across the headband. It makes wearing the headphones a pleasing experience. Choose such a pair.

The Hidden Costs of Free Stuff on Craigslist

Are you looking for something for nothing? If so, you may find yourself at Craigslist.org. Craigslist is an online classified website and service that has a free section. Click on your local page and you are likely to see hundreds of things for free. What you may find could include books, movies, clothes, furniture, appliances, and more. With that said, watch out for hidden costs. Although the Craigslist ad says "free," you usually end up spending a little bit of money.

Hidden Cost #1 - Gas
Although not necessarily a hidden cost, it is one that Craigslist free takers rarely think about. Now, if you are driving two blocks away to pickup a free couch, it isn't that bad. However, driving two hours for that couch will cost you more. You can drive as far as you want to get free things (like a $2,000 used swing set for free), but consider the cost of gas the cost of the swing set.

Hidden Cost #2 - Repairs
It is hit or miss as to whether you will get an honest person on Craigslist. Plus, you can use your best judgment. A person giving away a 2 year old laptop computer is likely doing so because it was broken (even if they don't say). If you buy an item (knowingly or not) that is broken, you have a choice to make. You can either trash the item or pay for repairs. In some cases, repairs are best. What if that free laptop only needed a $30 power cord? You still get an awesome deal, but it really isn't free anymore.

Hidden Cost #3 - Cleaning Supplies
Rarely does a Craigslist poster go out of their way to scrub down kid's toys and other items. It is free, so they get nothing in return for doing so. This means it is your job. Regardless of what you get for free on Craigslist (whether it be kids toys, clothes, or furniture), clean, clean, and clean some more. You never know and probably don't want to know where most of the stuff on Craigslist has been.

Hidden Cost #4 - Your Time
Don't make the mistake of assuming it is only time. Have you ever heard the phrase "your time is worth money?" It is. Whether you give up a few extra minutes playing with your kids, mowing the lawn, or if you dare leave work early, your time is something. The value of it all depends on you. For that reason, shop Craigslist's free section wisely. Make sure your time is spent wisely. Don't waste an hour of your time for junk, even if it is free.

5 Things to Know About Buying a Bar Code Scanner for Your POS Or Cash Register

Bar code scanners are not a new technology, but in the recent years they have really become economical, durable and accurate.

Here are five things you should know about buying a bar code scanner:

(1) What Type of Barcodes Will You Be Scanning?

There are several types of bar code systems in the world and before investing in a bar code scanner you should know what types of barcodes you will be scanning. If you are simply going to be printing and scanning the most basic type of barcode which is the one with the straight black vertical lines on a white background, those types of bar codes are called 1D barcodes.

1D barcodes are the most common bar code out there and they can be scanned with 1D barcode scanners which are relatively inexpensive. These barcode types utilize what is called a laser scanner to read them. Laser scanners are one of the most economical scanners on the market and if all you need to scan is 1D barcodes there is no sense in spending more money on more expensive models that also support 2D barcodes.

2D barcodes have small pixel dots that store much more information in the bar code compared to a 1D barcode, and they require an imager scanner to read them. Imager scanners are a bit more sophisticated than laser scanners and that is why they are typically more expensive. An imager scanner can usually read both 2D and 1D barcodes, but a laser scanner can only read a 1D barcode.

(2) Do You Need Portable Options?

Another thing to consider when selecting a bar code scanner is whether or not you will need a portable function built into it. Some scanners can be made totally portable by being completely wireless, while others are semi-portable being hand-held scanner attached with a wire to the computer system.

Semi-portable scanners are typically the most versatile because they can offer you the best of both worlds, giving you multiple options to scan items quickly at checkout. You can either bring the item to the scanner by scanning it underneath the scanner which sits mounted in a stationary scanning cradle, or you can pull the scanner out of the cradle and bring it up to the item being scanned - such as in the case of heavy items being left in a shopping cart which would be impossible to scan across the counter.

(3) How Rugged Do You Need?

Most scanners today are made to withstand the daily abuse the retail environment throws at them. They are durable and can last you a really long time even in the most hectic retail conditions.

However, some types of businesses require a bit more ruggedness when it comes to their scanners - such as for example when the general public is involved in the scanning, or the scanner could be dropped or hung by its cord etc.

If your type of business functions in very rugged conditions, you may want to consider upgrading to a rugged version of the scanner you're purchasing. Often times the extra few dollars invested in a rugged design could save you money in the future having to replace a scanner.

(4) What Type of Interface Will You Need?

Different scanners offer different input options. Find out what kind of input options your computer offers and which are the most efficient for your needs. Most scanners today will work with many standard interfaces such as USB, Bluetooth for wireless, serial ports and many others. However, you may need to specify your preferred interface option before ordering your scanner.

(5) What Software Will Run Your Scanner?

Another thing to consider is the type of Point of Sale software you'll be using to run your scanner. The scanner is simply just an input device so it is only as efficient and powerful as the software that uses it. If you are currently running an old outdated Point of Sale system or even a cash register, this might be the time to look into upgrading your software as well.

Will New Batteries Make Laptops Truly Mobile?

Current laptops or notebook computers have one
major obstacle to overcome: short battery life.

Despite their sleek style and ever increasing higher
performance levels, laptops have never been truly mobile.
With batteries averaging around 3 to 5 hours of usable
power, most laptops are limited in the amount of time
they can spent away from the warm electrical embrace
of a wall plug-in.

As most laptop owners will attest, running out of power when
you're sending that all important business email or watching
your favorite movie has always registered high on the annoyance
meter. In today's lingo --- it sucks big time!

Sure, things are improving, as new technology come on
stream (dual-core processors, hyper-threading) users are
getting longer battery life from their laptops.
But even as laptops become smaller and more efficient,
short battery life is still a limiting factor for most
laptops.

Fully loaded power sapping gaming laptops have been hardest
hit by this problem. Try playing a game or watching a movie
on battery power at your favorite beach for any extended time
and you will see why laptop batteries are in dire need of an
overhaul.

Laptop manufacturers are no doubt aware of this issue and
may be relieved help is on the way. Actually, the solution
to the power-challenged laptop is already here.

Once more, new technology comes to the rescue.

Short battery life for laptops and for all handheld electronic
devices will probably be solved by two new energy sources:
micro fuel cells and printable solar cells.

Micro fuel cells can use such fuels as alcohol or methanol
and offers ten times the power of conventional batteries
using only 1/20th the weight. Perfectly suited for laptops
or notebook computers. It actually burns fuel which can
be quickly replenished by merely refilling its reservoir
or replacing a fresh fuel cartridge. As everyone knows,
recharging a conventional cell battery takes hours, this
new battery will only take seconds to recharge or rather
refuel.

One of the major leaders in this new technology is MTI with
its Micro's Mobion® cord-free power pack which will probably
replace lithium ion batteries. These use direct methanol
fuel cells (DMFC). Expect these creatures to be in almost
22% of all of handheld devices by 2011. And if these new
micro fuel cells are embraced by the buying public; you
can kiss your lithium ion battery goodbye long before
that date!

Read more info on Micro Fuel Cells here:
http://www.mtimicrofuelcells.com

Even more promising is printable solar cells that folds
out or can be wrapped around or built into a laptop, giving
them a renewable energy source and power. One of the
leaders in this new technology is Konarka. They produce
a flexible lightweight photovoltaic plastic material
that will give any device solar energy.

As sunlight is not always available, Konarka technology
uses all types of light, including indoor light, to produce
electrical energy. These inexpensive printable solar cells
could have many applications, including a source of
power for laptops. Cheap, renewable and plentiful.

Read more on Photovoltaic Solar Cells here:
http://www.konarka.com

What we will probably see in the future is a hybrid of the
two technologies, micro fuel cells and photovoltaic solar
cells, working in tangent to give laptops an energy source
that never runs out. Unlimited power available anywhere,
anytime.

Micro fuel cells and printable solar cells will give laptops
the freedom and power they need to be used anytime, anywhere.
These new energy sources will finally make the laptop truly
portable. It will also make the Internet truly wireless, mobile,
and available everywhere.

Perish the thought!

Laptops & Netbooks - Which One Should You Buy - Pros and Cons - The Best Laptop & Netbook Properties

When you are considering whether to buy a full sized laptop or a netbook, there are many things you should look at before making your decision.

First of all; what are you planning on using it for? If you are going to be doing some major game playing, or using many applications at the same time, a laptop would probably be in your best interest. Full sized laptops generally have more hard drive space and more RAM than their netbook counterparts. This makes them much more effective for if you plan on using the unit for heavy gaming, or computer programming.

If, on the other hand, you just want to have a portable unit that you can bring with you anywhere you go, a netbook would probably be the better decision. Ranging from eight inches to twelve inches in size, they are much easier to cart around with you than a full sized laptop. Many of them are small enough that they can even fit in a purse or small handbag. They are perfect for portability and traveling.

Another factor to consider is battery life. Many of the netbooks can get six hours plus of battery life. This is handy for use on long vehicle trips, where you will not necessarily have access to a power outlet. It is also a benefit for coffee shops and other places you may want to use your netbook, but do not want to be bothered with hauling out all the extra cords to provide power to the unit. Laptops are substantially larger, and therefore consume much more power. Most laptops only give two or three hours of battery life, depending on the make and model (the larger the laptop, the shorter the battery life). This can be sufficient for some needs, but can fall short for many that use their computer for hours on end.

Price is becoming less and less of a factor in the difference between laptops and netbooks. It used to be that netbooks were much cheaper than laptops. Now laptops are dropping in price quickly, and there is not such a major difference in price.

One drawback that makes a major difference for me on the laptop versus netbook issue is the fact that I like to watch a lot of movies on my computer. As a result, I chose to go with the much larger and bulkier 17" laptop. I am always hauling out the power cord, and packing a large laptop bag around, but it is worth the trade off for me. I don't like to watch movies on a small screen. Nor do I like squinting to see what I am typing on my computer. I like a large unit that I can operate several programs at a time on, and build websites with.

Overall, there are many factors that should be considered before deciding on a netbook or a laptop. In the end, it all boils down to your own personal preferences and what you plan on using it for.

How to Protect Your External Hard Drive From Accidental Drop

Every time a client calls our office and utters the phrase, "I just dropped my external hard drive", I wince and fear the worst. I always feel bad for a client that finds themselves in this situation.

This is the worst that can happen to a hard drive, beside damage to platter area. When an external hard drive has been dropped, whatever the height, internal components will most likely get the brunt of it. The first component to get the brunt of it is the motor. That is why the next thing the client would say is "I plug it in and now it is not spinning". This is where I cringe. Of all the things that can go wrong, we always hope that it is not the motor. I don't think anybody in data recovery industry likes to hear about motor issue on a hard drive with multiple disks. Hey, if it is a single platter hard drive, we would give a sigh of relief. We welcome a laptop hard drive with multiple platter disks with motor issue. Ask why. The simple answer is alignment.

Ok. Let me explain what happen to the motor first, and then the alignment issue. The motor is the component that the platters sit on nicely and turns them at a given rpm. Inside the motor, we find motor bearings. These bearings help the motor turn smoothly with no vibration. Storage Review has a great reference guide related to the ins and outs of disk drives. You should read it if you want to know more.

Now, when an external hard drive is dropped, and the motor does not spin, the bearings most likely are dislodged from their grooves and clog the space the motor needs to spin. Many times, the motor becomes rigid that no torque force applied will do any good. In some cases, the motor is less rigid, but will not turn freely. In either case, it does not look good.

About alignment: When the motor cease or become rigid after the drop, especially when the hard drive was running, the disk platters may shift. The abrupt stop of the platters may shift them slightly off the motor. Hard drives with multiple platter disks are aligned at some time before shipment. For example, when a drive reads track 0, it reads track 0 for all surfaces. The tracks are aligned, and so the sectors on the tracks. So any shift, would misaligned the sectors from one platter to the next. So any shift, whatever small it is, will render the drive inoperable for data recovery. It is safe to say that no one can realign platters on a 3.5" form factor drives found on desktops and externals.

Even without a disk platter shift, motor issues are the Achilles' heel of data recovery. You can't simply remove the platters and move them on another disk. Some companies have introduced some platter tools, but there is nothing out there we know of is 100% full proof.

Another component that usually gets damaged is the read/write head stack. The read/write heads, upon the drop, would smack on the platter, or the ramp (on some drives, it is outside of the platter). The outer edge of platters with ramp sometimes gets damaged where the outer edge of platters meet the ramp.

As you can see, there are many things that can go wrong with a dropped external. Now, what are you doing to prevent that from happening to you? It is almost an epidemic that we get this type of calls from clients, and I always feel bad for them.

Here is how I can help you. If your external hard drive sits on a stand, lay it flat. Lay it flat even without a stand. If the stand is attached with screws, remove it, and lay it flat. It may look nice on the stand on your desk, but it will look bad if you knock it off the desk. Manufactures should know by now to design all of them to be flat on the desk.

We deal with a lot of external hard drives. We used them to save client data. We tell our engineers to place them flat on their belly to copy the recovered data.

Once you put them flat, keep the power cord and USB wire out of reach of children, dogs and yourself. Once you trip on them, the external hard drive will fly off your desk, and I will wince. We are sometimes negligent with power cords and power strips. Do not overload your outlets, it is a fire hazard. Shorten the length of your power cords by tying them neatly. It saves to be neat with your power cords.

Avoid moving your external hard drive too often. Get a 2.5" one if you have to move it often from one computer to the next.

If you have important data on your external hard drive, my wish for you is to take precautionary actions before you find yourselves uttering this phase, "I dropped my external hard drive". I will wince, and anybody else in this business will wince. It will cost you a lot if it can be recovered; and it will cost you more when it cannot be recovered.

Accident will happen, but backing up your data will make you the wisest.

Purchasing Your Portable Laptop

Before you purchase your laptop you'll want to familiarize yourself with the various features and determine what you need and what you do not. Some folks seek out all the latest bells and whistles. For others it's about getting your typical job done efficiently and cost effectively.

Here are some helpful hints:

To save yourself money look for a Celeron processor. Less expensive than a Pentium, it will work fine for all but the most detailed graphics projects. If you're a graphic artist or a professional programmer, however, seek out a laptop with Pentium processing.

126 MB RAM is the least you can be comfortable with nowadays, no matter what you're doing. And, unless you're buying used you're probably not going to find a laptop with less anyway. But what if you want to upgrade your memory? How easy is it to do that? How accessible is the panel for the memory chips? Are you comfortable with doing it yourself if you have to remove the case? Make sure it's not a laptop that actually requires some outside technical help to install more memory. .

The life of the installed battery is important. Generally the range of battery life available to laptops is two-four hours. Which is adequate depends on where you're going to be when you use your laptop. If you're a traveling sales rep who needs a laptop to your emails and prepare the daily report from your hotel room each evening you won't be using your battery a lot. If, however, you envision the life of the mobile warrior, sometimes creating your graphic or written masterpiece from the beach, or while traveling by air, you won't be able to rely on the power cord and electricity. You'll want that four-hour battery.

Make sure you have a minimum of three ports, to accommodate a number of peripherals such as printers, cameras and external floppy drives or modems. The number of ports you need depends on the internal features of your laptop as well as your own need for peripherals.

Obviously, if you have an internal modem you don't need a port for an external one. But if you have only a CD drive and copy to floppy on your PC at home, for the two to talk to each other you're going to need an external floppy drive on your laptop. For this you'll need a port. Be cognizant also of the types of ports. Your old mouse may connect by parallel port, but the newest versions require USB connection.

Make sure you have an internal modem and fax rather than external. And if you're shopping for a brand new laptop the wireless feature is terrific. Many places, such as RV and other resorts are totally Wi-Fi capable now.

If you're used to a traditional mouse do play around with several versions of mice available on laptops. Some will drive you crazy until you get used to them. See if you're most comfortable with trackball, touch pad or trackpoint. While you're checking that, play with that keyboard. So much smaller than a PC keyboard, you may have difficulty typing accurately with some. Try several.

The final things you'll want to compare are the software and the warranty. Major software programs such as Windows are almost always included in brand new systems, but do check. Especially if buying used. You can spend many hundreds of dollars on Microsoft Office and the latest Windows version if you don't have a version that you can upgrade.
